The Miscellany News

September 2007 - May 2011
Design, development, print

For four years, I led the design of Vassar's student newspaper, The Miscellany News. Established in 1866, the paper publishes a 20-page print edition each Thursday and continuously updates its website and blogs. After spending my freshman year as a graphics designer and cover designer, I started my sophomore year as the Design and Production Editor and for three years I worked closely with three Editors in Chief on more than sixty issues.

Each week, I worked on the paper's layout, created in-house advertisements, and designed graphics and charts as needed using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe InCopy. I also oversaw the design and technical aspects of the paper's website, including the creation of interactive features and the administration of its WordPress-powered blogs.

The Miscellany News Website

Web, miscellanynews.com

Over the past few years, The Miscellany News's website design has evolved tremendously into a site that is both clean yet content rich. I worked closely with the third-party company that administers the site's back end to customize the site to fit the Miscellany's changing needs and design ethic, utlizing Vassar's maroon and gray school colors. I also administered the paper's WordPress blogs, which are run on their own independent server. This allows for much more customized, concise, and efficient HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as the creation of interactive features for special articles.
